About Laos

The country is completely enclosed within the borders with China (200 km), Myanmar (Burma) (150 km), Thailand (1000 km), Vietnam (100 km) and Cambodia (150 km). Mountains and plateaux occupy 70% of the country.

It is watered by the Mekong River (1898 km in Laos out of a total of 4200 km) which is not navigable because of its irregular flow, and forms the major part of the border with Thailand.

The country spreads on 1000 km from north to south, from the border with China with that of Cambodia. Sometimes, it is only 100 km wide.

In Laos, the climate is tropical (hot and humid), characterized by monsoons with two seasons : a dry season from October to April, and a rainy season from May to September.

Approximate temperatures : 15 / 20° in December, January, 30° in March / April.

It may rain in October and November.

The forest (very worn away) covers 52,8% of the country.
